Epoxy is a relatively recent invention, and literally thousands of 'stitch 'n glue' boats were built in the 60's and 70's with glass tape and polyester resin. one of the best known perhaps being the mirror dinghy - they were all built from kits, and i think at least 50,000 were produced.. Stitch and glue is a simple boat building method which uses plywood panels stitched together, usually with copper wire, and glued together with epoxy resin.this type of construction can eliminate much of the need for frames or ribs. plywood panels are cut to shape and stitched together to form an accurate hull shape without the need for forms or special tools.. Most stitch and glue boats are made from wood, being so we strongly recommend using an epoxy system to do the gluing and laminating. the reason for this is that nothing sticks as well to wood as epoxy..
Re: epoxy/ stitch and glue alternatives chase i freely admit that i think paul oman is politically a complete looney. but i'd like to hope that i can keep that separate from my evaluation of his epoxy chemistry knowledge and skills.. The total building time for the canoe hiawatha hc16 was 40 hours, spread over a couple of months. after each glueing, laminating and fairing the epoxy has to cure for one or two days before. I built a small, fast and light sport row boat from plywood and epoxy resin. a short reportage of the work...and result. the boat has a length of 4 meters and a weight of about 16 kilos..
